From $200 Gate Money to CEO: How I Built a Successful Brand and Company in Four Years
My transformation from 17 years behind bars to building a blueprint for modern leadership and masculinity
Hey everyone,
Four years ago, I walked out of a California prison with exactly $200 in my pocket. "Gate money," they call it: just enough for a bus ride home or a meal and an outfit. After serving 17 years for a crime I committed when I was 18, I stepped into a world that had completely transformed while I was gone. I went in during the flip phone era and came out to smartphones, social media, and a digital world I'd never seen.
I was paroled to Los Angeles, the same city where my story began. I knew exactly one person who would let me crash on their couch while I was on parole, trying to figure out how to rebuild my life. These were the same streets I used to run as a kid, the same neighborhoods I'd left behind as a teenager. But now I was coming back as a man with a completely different mission.
Today, I'm the CEO and founder of How To Battle, a leadership development company working mainly here in Los Angeles with Fortune 500 corporations, institutions of learning, foster homes, and prisons. I've written two books, I host a podcast, and I speak on stages across the country. My latest book, Warrior in the Garden: 7 Rules for Men, is what I believe is a revolutionary blueprint for modern masculinity.
I know it sounds almost impossible. But here's what I've learned: this transformation represents something way deeper than just personal success. It's proof that purpose can emerge from the darkest places, and that real leadership isn't about where you've been, but where you're determined to go.
Let me share how this all happened.
My Real Education: Three Years in Solitary
My journey to leadership started in the most unlikely classroom you can imagine: a 6x9 prison cell. I spent three years in solitary confinement, completely stripped of every external distraction. That's when I began what I now call my "real education." I read over 150 books on psychology, philosophy, business, and personal development. I even earned my degree while I was locked up.
Solitary confinement became my laboratory. It taught me how to silence all the noise and really listen to my authentic voice and heart. More importantly, it taught me how to create space for others to find theirs.
During those years of forced introspection, I developed what became my signature framework: The P.R.I.C.E. methodology. These five principles were literally born from my darkest moments. Today, I use them to guide executives at companies like Google and Rehrig Pacific when they're facing their own complex leadership challenges.
But there was another encounter that changed everything. I had this powerful meeting with a chaplain during my time in solitary that sparked what I can only describe as an "indomitable spirit and journey toward self-awareness and purpose." That spiritual awakening didn't just shift my perspective. It completely rewired my understanding of who I could become.
My Rebirth: June 25, 2021
June 25, 2021. I celebrate this date more than my actual birthday because it marked my release and what I call my "rebirth." The world I walked into looked nothing like the one I'd left 17 years earlier. Technology had exploded, social dynamics had completely shifted, and the entire nature of work and communication had evolved.
I'll be honest with you. I didn't even know how to use an iPhone. The learning curve was absolutely vertical. But I had something more valuable than technical knowledge. I had a growth mindset and crystal-clear clarity about who I was becoming.
That clarity became my secret weapon. While others might have been overwhelmed by how fast everything was changing, I approached this new world with what I call "radical humility": being willing to become a complete beginner again. AI tools, social media platforms, Zoom calls, digital marketing, building my first website—I absorbed it all with the same focused intensity that had served me in prison.
Building Something Meaningful
What I accomplished in just four years goes against everything people expect about reentry success. Most formerly incarcerated people struggle just with the basics: finding housing, getting a job, rebuilding relationships. I didn't just reintegrate; I completely revolutionized my entire trajectory.
My first book, The P.R.I.C.E.: Five Principles to Break the Bonds of Trauma and Achieve Personal Success, established me as a thought leader in personal development. The How To Battle podcast started gaining a devoted following among executives, entrepreneurs, and people seeking real transformation.
But my speaking career is what really shows the scope of what's possible. I go from Fortune 500 boardrooms to juvenile detention centers, from private retreats to university campuses. I deliver a message that transcends all the traditional boundaries. My approach to leadership—Human-Centered Leadership—is all about authenticity, vulnerability and having the courage to lead from purpose instead of just position.
Becoming a Pillar in Los Angeles
Here in Los Angeles, I've become more than just a success story. I've become a pillar and someone making real impact in the very community that once seemed to offer me no future. Working mainly in LA, I've completely transformed my relationship with this city from one of survival to one of service.
My work with at-risk youth in Los Angeles gives them the mentorship I never got as a teenager running these same streets. My corporate consulting helps LA-based companies develop more inclusive, human-centered leadership approaches. When I speak at local universities and community centers, I'm offering hope to people who think their circumstances are permanent.
I came back to the same streets but with a completely different mission. Instead of taking from this community, I'm giving back to it. Instead of being part of the problem, I'm working to be part of the solution.
Warrior in the Garden: My Blueprint for Men
My latest book, Warrior in the Garden: 7 Rules for Men, is probably my most ambitious project yet. I'm drawing from my experiences navigating both prison hierarchies and corporate boardrooms to offer a framework for what I call "authentic masculinity": strength that's tempered by wisdom, power that's channeled through purpose.
The seven rules—everything from strategic silence to building authentic brotherhood—came from hard-won lessons I learned in the most challenging environments you can imagine. I used to lead men into war. Now I'm leading them into purpose. The skills are transferable but the mission is completely different.
This book addresses a crisis that goes way beyond prison walls: the struggle modern men face trying to find meaning, purpose, and authentic connection in an increasingly complex world. My approach doesn't shy away from the realities of masculine strength, but it emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence, community, and service.
The warrior in the garden concept isn't about being soft. It's about being strong enough to choose peace, capable enough to protect what matters, and wise enough to know the difference.
Using Technology to Amplify Impact
Here's something that still amazes me: I've taken the very technology that initially overwhelmed me and used it to amplify my impact. My social media reaches hundreds of thousands of followers across platforms. My podcast downloads keep growing every month. My courses and programs serve clients nationwide.
But for me, technology is just a tool serving a much larger mission. Social media can hide or reveal you. AI can replace your voice or sharpen it. Automation can make life easier or make it meaningless. As leaders, our job is to humanize the digital and remind people that the tools we use should amplify our integrity, not replace it.
What's Next
As I celebrate four years of freedom, I'm already focused on the next phase of my mission. I'm working on a third book, speaking engagements keep multiplying, and How To Battle Consulting is expanding into new markets and demographics.
But maybe most importantly for men today, Warrior in the Garden offers a message that's desperately needed right now. We're facing a crisis of authentic leadership and meaningful masculinity. This book isn't just my story. It's a roadmap for any man who wants to build something meaningful.
The numbers tell part of the story: from $200 to a thriving enterprise in four years, from unknown ex-convict to leadership expert, from isolation to influence. But the real measure of my success isn't financial. It's the lives I've touched, the leaders I've developed, and the systems I've helped transform.
The Battle Continues
I didn't just survive 17 years underground. I learned how to emerge, adapt, and lead in a world that had evolved beyond recognition. Now I help others do the same, whether they're coming out of their own underground or simply trying to stay human in an increasingly automated world.
In a culture obsessed with overnight success and instant gratification, I represent something different: the power of patient transformation, the strength found in vulnerability, and the leadership that emerges when purpose meets preparation. My story isn't just about personal redemption. It's about the possibility of transformation that exists within every single person, regardless of their past.
As I always say, "The battle becomes the blessing." For me, that battle has become a blueprint for others seeking their own path from chains to change, from survival to significance, from prisoner to purpose-driven leader.
